For new graduates, expats, or anyone getting their first card — requirements, what to look for, and common mistakes.

Requirements and Eligibility

Basic requirements for Saudi banks:
• Saudi national ID or valid Iqama (for expats)
• Minimum salary: SAR 3,000-5,000/month for basic cards, SAR 8,000-15,000 for premium cards
• Salary transfer to the issuing bank (some banks require this, others don't)
• Age: 18+ (some banks require 21+)
• Employment letter or salary certificate

For new graduates: Start with a basic card from the bank where your salary is deposited. You'll have the easiest approval since the bank already sees your income.

For expats: Some banks are more expat-friendly than others. Al Rajhi, SNB, and Riyad Bank generally accept Iqama holders with stable employment. Expect lower initial limits (SAR 5,000-15,000) that increase over time.

Top Mistakes to Avoid

1. Treating it as free money. A credit card is a loan. If you can't afford it with cash, don't put it on the card.

2. Not setting up autopay immediately. Do this the day you activate the card. Full balance autopay. No exceptions.

3. Applying for the fanciest card. Start basic. A free card with decent cashback is better than a premium card with a SAR 1,000 fee when you're just starting out.

4. Ignoring the statement. Check every transaction. Fraud happens, errors happen. Catch them early.

5. Cash withdrawals. Never use your credit card at an ATM. The fees are brutal and profit starts from day one with no grace period.

6. Applying to multiple banks at once. Each application creates a SIMAH inquiry. Multiple inquiries in a short period look desperate and lower your score. Apply to one bank at a time.
